LIEDERTAFEL CONCERT.
Tho ninth, concert given by the ganui Liedertafel took place iast evening. Long before the advertised time for starting there was not an empty seat in the dress circle or stalls, whilst the pit was fairly full. The items given by the Liedertafel were splendidly rendered; and reflected credit on t]he conductor (Mr. G. W.
Naylorl «nd the members alike. Two of the numbers were encored, whilst all were loudly applauded. The following1 were the part songs rendered:—"When the Swallows Homeward Fly" (Abt) A "Comrades In Anns" (Adam), "The Anvil" (Adam), "Spin, Spin" (Jungst), "The Goslings" •(Bridge), and "Cradle Song" (Stenz). The audience were given a musical treat by Madame Eveleen Carlton, of Wellington.
Her first number was Henschel's "Spring," _Jwhich was sung in a charming manner. •, In response to a vociferous encore, she j gave a very (pleasing rendition of "The j Pedlar," for which, she was again loudly applauded. During the second part of the programme Madame Carlton sang "Vainka's Song," by Stutzman. In this song sho used Tier splendid soprano voice to the utmost advantage, and was rewarded by a 2>ronounced encore, giving in response, "Through Sunny Spun." For this sWe was again loudly applauded. The other visiting vocalist was Mr. George M. Hall, of Chrißtchurch, who sang two songs, "The Wolf" and "The Yeoman's Wedding" being_ deservedly encored for each item. In his 'cello solos Mr. M. Humphries demonstrated that he was an artist of very high order, his .playing being the finest heard in Wanganui for a long time. His numbers were "Hymne Aus Stradella" and "Reverie," both beiug encored. Mr. Humphries also took part with Messrs. Henry and Herbert Collier in a trio for piano, violin, and 'cello. A quartette, "In Absence," was nicely rendered by . Messrs. Lennard, Mjelloi\ Bassett, and Alderson. Miss Richmond, the newlyappointed music mistress at the Girls' College, played a pianoforte solo, "Dv Meine Secle," and was compelled to twice bow her acknowledgrrjents. Taken altogether, the concert was most enjoyable, and the members of the Liedertafel are to be congratulated on the success of their efforlis.
