STABBING AFFRAY AT WELLINGTON.

WELLINGTON, May. 13,
Thomas Brown, seaman oelonging to> the American steamer Bechuana, was arrested on a oharge of stabbing Harry Burton, a barman. The latter alleges that Brown attempted to snatch a bottle of bser from him, and failing in this, drew a knife ana stabbed him in the shoulder.
On the other hand, Brown alleges he was returning" to his ship when be was set upon by some men, who demanded his" money. One of the men hit him in the face and knocked him down. Thereupon he drew a- knife in self-defence, and used it on his nearest assailant.
Brown is regarded by his shipmates as an unoffensive man.
Burton was received at the hospital. His wounds are not serious.
