Sir,— l have heard it rumoured that the tradesmen of "the Avenue and Ridgway Street are considering the advisability of forming a committee for the purpose of getting a water-cart for their own use in sprinkling the business thoroughfares in windy, dusty weather. Can you tell me if there is any foundation in the rumour? Yesterday, the 19th instant, a visitor to our "lovely little town" might easily have imagined himself in an African Veldt Township, experiencing the gentle influences of one of its playful dust storms. The water-cart put in an appearance, as usual, •it mid-day, when all the loose dust had tound its way in amongst the shops scattered along the principal streets of the town. This morning looked like a repetition of yesterday, but the rain, more considerate than our councillors, merciful 'y '.aid low the offending demon. Passing down the Avenuo about 10 a.m. yesterdoy, I noticed a butcher cutting a succulent steas. from the buttock of one of your prime bullocks. It was.no sooner laid upon the • scales than a cloud of dust (the excrement of horses, dogs, etc., etc.) entering by the wide open front, laid a thick stratum upon the surface of the (otherwise) rich looking morsel. Was this on its way to tho table of one of our somnolent Council' ors Shades of Koch and all other bacteriologists, think of the result !•— I am, etc., JET D'EAU. I
