FUNERAL OF LATE CAPT SUTCLIFFE
'• (By Telegraph.) MARTON, July J5. The funeral of Captain Sutcliffe was the largest ever held in Martqn. Besides the military,' friends were present from one end of the district to the other, the pro; cession being the best part of a mile long! The pall-bearers were Captain Seager and Lieut. Dust in (City Guards), and Captain Hughes, Lieut Redmond (Wanganui Rifles). The coffin-bearers .-were Sergeants-Major Snellgrove <md Henderson, Sergeant Pollettand. Veteran Webb. Both the' Rifles and Guards and tiie Alexandra Cavalry were represented . iff" the procession, and there was a strong' muster of the Royals under Captain Batten and Lieutenants Snellgrove and Hilton. The Wauganui Garrison Band was present under Mr" J. Crichton, and rendered the "Dead March in Saul," "Rock Hill", and "The Garland of Flowers." At the j grave they played "Lead Kindly ' Light" and- "Hark, x the Herald Angles Sing.'" The town band, under Mr Pedersen, was ia full strength, and the two bands relieved one another. A gun carriage from Wanganui bore the coffin of the deceased officer, drawn according to military :'custom. The Veru Ach. fowgood performed the last sad rites at. the grave. The funeral arrangements were in. charge of Mr W. R. Snelljirrfve and were complete. The Royals fired the usual salute at the grave. So profuse were tho floral tributes that they were conveyed to the cemetery in' a special trap. Colonels Watt, Surgeon-Major " Skerman, Major Ross and Lieutenant Marr were also present.
