WANGANUI COUNTY COUNCIL
The ordinary meeting of the Wanganui County Council was held on Friday, there being "present Messrs J. E. Wilson (in the chair), McGregor, Baker, Robinson, Poison, Georgetti, Fletcher, Mason and Anderson. Minutes — The minutes of the last ordinary and special meetings were read and confirmed. The Returning Officer reported that Mr Allan Robinson ha:l been elected to represent the Upper Wangaehu Riding on the Council, vice Mr Alex. Higgie, resigned. Deputation — Messrs! Cowan, Earle and Cullinane waited upon the Council respecting the stoppage of their road (Matatara), by the continual flooding of the Upokongaro Stream, and asked that a sum be included in the proposed loan for Aberfeldie Bridge and Shakespeare's Cliff for the purpose of constructing a bridge acio-s the Upokongaro Stream on the Matatara Road, It whs resolved that the application of the -Matatara settlers be granted, and that the Council proceed to build a bridge across the Upokongaro Stream provided that one,lu*Jf of the cost is paid by the local body or the settlers interested. Mr Ajiderson, of Eastown, waited upon the Council and presented a petition from the Matamataongaong;, ratepayers praying that the Matamatnongaonga Riding be constituted a road district. It was resolved that the petition of the Mntamatuongnonga . ratepayers be grunted, provided that it is found by the chairman and clerk lo be in order. Mangawhero Road Board — Mr Ross, chi'irman of the Mangawhero Road Board, attended respecting tho annexation of a portion of this road district to the Upper Wangaehu Road District, and stated that his Board had sent "an objection to the Colonial Secretary. On the motion uf the chairman, seconded by Mr McGregor, it was resolved that, as Cr Poison intends being in Wellington shortly, he be asked to wait upon the Under-Secretary for Lands respecting the subsidies to Wangaehu and Mangawhero Bridges, and the Aberfeldie Bridge plan. New Zealand Counties Conference — It was resolved that the chairman be appointed to represent the Council at the N.Z. Counties' Association Conference. A letter was received from the Ohincmuri County Council asking co-operation in urging Government to transfer administration of licensing elections lo local bodies. It was resolved "Tliat thin Coucil approves of the alteration, and will bo pleased to cooperate with the Ohinemuri County Council, and that tlie Counties' Association should discuss the matter at. its- next Conference. Mr G. Hutchison wrote, enclosing a copy of the Waimarino County Bill. It was resolved that the chairman and the Councillors representing the Upper Wangaehu and Mangawhero Ridings be a committee to inquire into tho matter and reply to Mr Hutchison's letter. It was resolved that llic letter be replied to, and that the cHirmnn would be pleased to accept, the office. A communication was received from the Wangnnui Borough Council re measures to bo taken for the prevention of plague. It was resolved to reply that the Council agrees with the Borough's suggestion that the Council pay a quarter of cost of rats purchased, provided that ths area be extended .so as to include tho whole of the County, and that with regard to the hosp'tal that tho Council will pay any reasonable expsii-c.^ which may be incurred by the admission of a patient fiom ths Coupty, to tho Hospital. A lett=r was received from the Rangitikei County Council ro Wangaehu Ferry. It was resolved to infoim tho Ranptikei. Council thut no pli-nt of the ferry had keen sold, and that as soon as any is, the Rangit'kei County Council will be paid its proportion, and that as the punt could not be sold (being built of whit? pine) it was given to Cr Fletcher in consideration of his trouble in connection with the Jerry and bridge. River Encroachment— lt was ' resolved that the chairman and Mr Poison, in the : r places on tfc.3 Harbour Board, be empowered to state the case and act in the matter of tho river encroachment at the upper end of Shakespeare's Cliff, and to urgr upon the Board the necessity of counteracting the current affecting tho Cliff Road by the putting in of groins on the right bank of the river, or in any way they may think best to prevent tl-,3 river washing the road away. Sanitation — The Assistant Sanitary Inspector for the Borough (who bad been requested to supply a report on the sanitary condition of tho premises from the junction of. No. 2 Line tothe cliff on Piitiki Road) reported as requested. - lij addition he suggested that every house should have pans in their privies and the S3rvices of the Borough nightman obtained (which could be done nt a reasonable-'cost), and not thrown into tho river as at present done. He recommeinnded that all old buildingsTon the river bank should be removed as soon as possible, they being an eyesore and very objectionable. The Sanitation Committee reported that they endorsed the Inspector's report. Stove— The (secretary was in<struc f ed to procure y. stove before next meeting.
