The (second announced that Majorgeneral Lord Methneh had received a slight flesh-wound in the thigh. The news created a great sensation in London. The War Office intimated that Lord Methuen would likely be well in a few days. The 'ist of casualties show* that Lieu-tenant-Colonel H. P. Northeote (Leicester Regiment), of Lord Methuen's staff, Major Horace R. Stopford, Captain Sydney Earle Coldstream Guards), and L. Long were killed, and 19 officers wounded, includine Major Henry Earle (King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, and brother of Captain c>ydney Earle, of the Coldstreams). Major Count Gleichen (Grenadier Guards) was severely wounded. Tho. Hon. Edward Lygon, brother of Earl Beauchamp, was slightly wounded. The fewness of the casualties on the side of the British suggests that the battle was fought at long range. It is believed ths shrapnel and Lyddit- did much execution. Tlie enemy had, to a large extent, determined to retreat. Communication by raEway and telegraph from Capetown is open ito- the Modder River, about 20 or 25 miles south of Kimberley. The wounding, of the Hon. Robert Lygon, brother of Earl Beauchamp, at the battle of Belmont is confirmed.
