RANGITIKEI NOTES.
WESLEYAN SPRING FLOWER SHOW. MARTON,' Friday. The above Show took p'.ace in the Drill Hall, Marton to-day. The various exhibits taken as a whole were a splendid lot, and the Committee should feel proud to think that their labours have been amply rewarded. Messrs Ait. Ross, of Marton, and Jas. Al'ison, of Wanganui, wcr. tli_ judges for flowers, fruit, and vegetables ; while Mesdames Ross and Esam judged "th. produce, butter, etc., and their decisions were well received by the exhibitors. Messrs H. C. Gibbons, of Wellington, and W. T. Benefield, of Aramolio, exhibited a splendid assortment of roses, stocks, and rhododendrons, which added largely to the gathering. The pansies, roses, md po.a--toes were, the judges said, the best they had seen for the season. The bouquets and epcrgno prizes, won by Mtas mint, were tastefully made up, and lvally handsome. 1. The tea koisk was situated on the right side on entering, where' afternoon tea was laid out in grand stylo, and was presided over by Mrs Poimingt-) . and Miss Morris. 2. Fancy stalls : Mesdaii' -s Spence and Gruar, assisted by Misses Jolly, i.arford, Parker, and Blackwell. 3. Toys : Misses Wilton and Lyon, 4. Lollies and drinks : Miss Biilens, assisted by _■ lorrie Gruar and Ethel Mossman. 5. l.un>.'_uon : Mesdames Mossman, White, and Andrew. The secretarial duties were ably carried out by Mr Biilens, and class steward, Mr F. Hunt, to the satisfaction of all parties. The Show re-opens .to-morrow, when the stalls will be replenished by an assortment of useful articles. The carpentering trade is particularly j brisk just now. Mr McChesney has just < completed a pretentious residence for Mr J. Warring (junior), at Mount' Curl ; has sent one staff to Poukiore to build for Mr Powell has another large staff of work on Messrs Mather and. Wilson's School, which I understand will rank amongst the largest bu.'.dings in the district. The timber fpr Mr Alhnah's residence is also being stacked for seasoning. This, with other work now in hand, will keep Mi* McChesney busy till the end of March, and it redounds to his credit that so confident are his clients of his ability and integrity that most of the work has been given to him at his own prico. " The local amateurs wound up their season of three-nights on Thuisday, to an enthusiastic audience. The characters were well sustained, especially by Mesdames Fitzherbert, Humphrey, and Awdry, and Messrs Little, Wilson, and Gibbons and Dr Skerman. Mir W. J. Smith was in his old . place as conductor, 'and had everything to perfection in his line. The tbe'a tre wns lit with electric light, and showed their beautiful scenery to great advantage. Mr G. A. Descilly, of the Maiton Begistry Officp, advertises for a situation on farm or station for an experienced hand. Saturday. The inclemency of the weather completely spoiled the second day's opening of the Flower Show, the attendance being not so large as the first day. The total p-eceeds of the Show amounted to £82. Miss Mossman took first prize in the table de .orations; Mrs Fullerton, 2; Miss Deighton, 3. We omitted to mention that oui local nurseryman, Mr F. Hunt, exhibited a varied assortment of roses and rhododendrons; Jas. Laird and Sons also sent some beautiful specimens, which added considerably to make the Show more attractive, and for which the Committee are deeply indebted. Archdeacon Towgood also exhibited some first-class roses. The exhibits remaining after the Show were disposed of by auction by R. 8.. Beckett, Esq.-, at satisfactory prices. The Marton. Town Band enlivened the proceedings during the first evening by their varied selections. . Sunday. Owing to the wet weather the cnurch parade wa. very poorly attended. Mr Beckett held a successful sale of Bad dlery at Mr Temperley's yesterday. Mr Bruce, had a successful meeting at Turakina on Saturday, and speaks at Marton on Monday. Mr Stevens was in town to- jay, ant speaks at Oroua Bridge on Monday, anc. Greatford on Tuesday. % also hsC ('it meeting with him afc Bulls on Saturday. It is anticipated thafc the polling between Messrs Stevens and Bruce will be very close. It is pleasing to note that boti parties are confident.
