FEVER AT PANAMA.
Yellow fever ha.s made sad havoc" among the crews of merchant ships at Panama. The German ship Covioianus reports at Victoria quarantine station having lost 15 men. The British barque Edenballymore lost cis many, and the wife of Captain May also *accumbed. The Coriolanus was lying at Panama when the men of her crew brought the germs) of the dread disease on board. Captain Gatling put to sea, but found the ship was as badly infected as Panama, and was obliged to return to port for assistance. With a picked-up crew he finally managed to get away and to reach Victoria. After disinfection, the ship will take a cargo of salmon to Liverpool from Chicago. The Times and Herald say that President MeKinley has demanded from, the Governments of Russia, Germany and Fiance an assurance that, in the division of China into "spheres of influence,"' the trade rights of the citizens of America shall be respected. It is expected these demands will be acceded to as soon as the necessary correspondence can pass. It is said that a tacit understanding already exists, and the matter has been thoroughly discussed.
