BAD FOR THE GARDENS,
-"They freeze you out iv the winter and starve you in the summer; jjut still they -hold' their hand out for the money." ■The speech illustraltes .the ungrateful attitude assumed by one of nineteen defendants summoned at the West Ham Police Court by the East London Water Company. The charge, as usual, was that of using water for gardening purposes •without extra payment to the Company. In the case of Mr Thomas Wright, an aeronaut, of Margary Park Road, defendant said his wife had a few ferns, and be- - ing unable, on account of illness, to lift a water-pot to some hanging baskets, she used a few - yards of hose. Mr Gill agreed under these circumstances to Withdraw the summons/ /and Mr Wright expressed his thanks'. "Will you come over . and have a drink, any of you ?" he asked hs he left - the court. Fines of 5s and costs were imposed in the majority of cases.
