EXTENSION OF STATE FARM SYSTEM.
(Pun Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Apr.il 7 A deputation from tiie Women's Social and Political League waited on the Premier to day to urge the extension of the State Farm syßtem. The scheme, as outlined, involved the purchase of three sices near Wellington, of a total area of 232 acres, at a cost of £6000, and £1000 for building's and improvements, the money to come out of Charitable Aid funds. Upon these would be placed, sa , 100 pensioners who would pay 5a per week, and 500 others —destitute persons, those of weak minds, etc. — to relieve the asylums, whose work was valued at 10s per week. Tho estimated earnirgs would be about £6500 per .annum, and the expenses £ 610. Iv reply, the Hon E. J. teddon said he was g'ad^ to see the women taking an interest in thise questions. The proposals would be laid before his colleagues, and he took the opportunity to tay that the Government lv«d no intention of banding over its institutions to the Salvation Army. The latter only proposed to establish industrial colleges, as elsewhere, and to these the magistrates would have the power of committing. At the same time there was no doubt the reformatories established by private bodies were superior to the State institutions, and especially those of the Salvation Army, who looked after the future of inmates.
