STRANGE STORY OF A LUNATIC

A man mamed Bobert Livingstoue, who was before the Court on a ohargo of stealing an'oilskin coat, said ho had been confined in tho Melbourne Lunatic Asylum, whence he was discharged as oured. Thence he was sent to Sydnoy in Hnddart Packer and Oo.'s boat, and that tha Company had to find a bond of £500 for maintenance, as within two days of bis arrival ho again showed signs of insanitr. Than, according to Liringstono, tho Company poraaaded bim fco go lo Now Zealand, where a bond of £100 onlyj ia req/u'red. At Christchurch he was placed in tho Sunnysido Asylum, and (he Company refused to tako hira back en hor to Bydney or Molbourno. Ho oame up hero, and informed Inspector Ponder ho was going, to commit a theft in orier to bring oat fcho facto. Murrell, Huddarfc Parkor's ngent, told Ihi representative of the Post, wbo interviowoel him on tho subject;, that thoy had tried to gofc the man to roturn from Bydnoy to Melbourne, but he refused. The Company would now probably havo to pay for hie maintonanco. Thoy would like to send him back to Melbourne, but hewan'?d to go to Sydney. If thoy shipped him they oould not prevent him landing at Sydney j or Hobart, and so the Company found ! (hemeolves quite unoble to get rid of him. The case is now being considered by the Melbourne Shipowners' Aisociation. Mr Murrell thinks there should be a provision giving the Government; power to eend any lunatio baok fco the place where he came trom.
