QUEENSLAND V. NEW SOUTH WALES. Brisbane, August 10. The Queensland team bent New South Waleß by 26 pointa to 16, AUCKLAND V. WaNGANIfI. AUOKLAND VICTORIOUS BY Slst TO THREE. ' (SI'EOIAL .0 ChBOHIC--). Auckland, August 10 There were about 4000 spectators at Potter's Paddock on Saturday to witness I the mat -h Auckland v, Wanganui, There was fine weather but a strong breeze. Crerswell won the toss from Riley, and to the groat self congratulation of the Wangaaui supporters chose to play with J the advantage of the wind and sun. In the first few minutes of the first spell the Wanganui men were over-eager, and[ fumbling allowed Auckland to invarje their territory, A sustained attack at length ended in Brown daßhing over tbe lineand scoring "first blood" for Auckland. Tilley seemed to stop h'm outside the . line, but a try waß awarded. The kick it goal ' was a failure. Wanganui then I woke up with a vengeance, and an . irresistible forward rush by Blair, -* Carroll, Emmerson, Eiddell and Morton . ended in "Joe" shooting over amid 9 deafening applause. Cresßwell's kick 1 from a fairly diffioult angle went a foot outside the post. Auckland again attacked, and from what appeared a palpable passforward in a scrambling rush -Abeolum scored The kick waß. again a failure, , just as the bell rang for the end of the ' spell. The enthusiasm of the spectatorwas arou.ed by the brilliant passing rush . between Beamish, Tbompon, McLean and Creaswell. The last-named , .should 'h.ve .scored,, having only five ' yards to go and no one .within fen yard), > but he failed to take alow fiery pass from > McLean, acd a groan went up fnm the Wanganui supporters, of whom there were a host, as a knock-on was recorded, atd half-time was oalled. With the advantage of tbe wind and the sun gone, and the score at six fo three, tbe - victory seemed assured for Auckland, as the breeze freshened and kicking against it to any advantage was almost im- | possible. Bat the Wanganui '-boys" were in great heart and fettle, and despite a continuous attaok d urine nearly. the ' whole of the last half of the second npell- , Auckland could never score. The defence , was too sure and deadly. Twice at i least during (he spell Wanganui had - brilliant openings. At. the middle Thompson broke away after intercepting a pass, and with all the rest of the Auck--1 land team back m full cry behind him, and only the full-back to pass, with McLean and Cresswell backing up, a ' scoie was a certainty if he tad pass-id, but he did not, Wacg inni'i last chance had passed, and the game ended-jwitb the score— -AuoHand six points, Wanganui three. The play was mostly, forward. In this' department Wanganui quite held ' their own, with one important exception, which lost them the motoh. - They could not get possession of the ball, and out of every ten times Auckland got it eight. It waß olear from the little that was seen of it that the Wanganni backs on the attack were too good for Auckland, but owing to the forwards not being able tt get the ball. he batiks had no chance*-. . In other respects JVanganui- was'" the better (eim all round The game" should certainly have besn at 'least a draw, as may be seen by 'the fact that only a fumble by Cresswell, u-uilly sure at taking the ball, prevented Wanganui fiom scoring either a draw or a wink
