EMIGRANTS FOR WANGANUI.
£y the last San Francisco mail the Mow iqg letter was received, and delivered to Sergeant Yillers, Inspector of Factories. We pmit names and places : — London, Bnq,, June 1,1895. To the Chief. The Government Labour Bureau, Wanganui, N.Z. s Dear Sib,— ln acoordanoe with a sug--1 gestion in the New Zealand Handbook, (No. 8) issued in London to emigrant! having no certain prospects of employment to communicate with one of the Labour Bureaux in advance, I herein state ronghly the number capabilities and proposed location of my family party. My present knowledge of localities is, of course, gained from the several books on New Zealand, issued by or through the Agent-General for N.Z , in London. We are nine all told, comprising, — my brother, a grown up Bon, myself, my wife, and three daughters (18, 16J, 15) and two boys (14 and 11). Bather a large order, I admit, but all ready to work if given the opportunity. My brother who is joining me at Capetown bas been several years in the country in Africa (three years management of one place) as stock dealer, breeder, etc, understands tha work gener ally on a cattle-farm, does rough carpentering, and will do anything that comes to hand. Ihe son has already gone forward to N.Z., where he will join us. He can milk, and do general farm work as is it done in Canada, from where he has just prooeeded, a strong, able and willing go- ' ahead chap. Myself, used to horsej, can drive, good kitchen gardener, handy with tools and can paint. The wife is an industrious housekeeper and excellent laundress. The daughter (18), a domehtic ; the daughter (164), » seamstress ; the daughter (15), nuraegirl; boy (14) handy lad, the other _»«^pot jwukfid yet. Now the question arises, we have to separate, which is probable, could we' three men find work together, or nearly so, with, perhaps a girl, the eldest, and a boy (15) m the same employ, and the wife and younger ones follow iheir employ ment in the town, Wanganui for instance. Would a good laundress or seamstress maka a living in Wanganui. The seamstress has Been serving her tirnej and is a smart g}rl for Her age. 'Jhewifewbuld not objeottoenter service in {he same emplpy as my-elf, pro : Vide'd a knowledge of your colonial cooking did not debar her, andtha younger ones were placed. If it is not advisable for the and' dangjitpr, or at the least the youngpr ones, to proceed to your district, pndfhere are likely openings ? or we tn ? ee njen, m whatever capacity, we could proceed fitter establishing the women fplkin a small way in Wellington, at which port wo disemjjark from the S,B. Gothic, arriving there on or about August 26th nest. I may here mention that our views are ultimately to take up " Crown " or other lands on our own accoint, preferably where outside employment can be obtained at times by some of us, and any employment leading to that end will be acceptable in more ways than one. As M.T. sayß, "We've come to stop," Any suggestions or information you can furnish me with will be kindly appreciated and acted upon if poisible by us. Here I may say, that we are all abstainers, of good charactar and disposition, musically inV olined and good company generally. Messrs ' Levin and Co., or W. and G. Turnbull and Co., Wellington, the agents for Shaw Savill and Albion Co. would hand me any communication you may be able to forward m«. Thanking you in anticipation;— l am, dear «ir, yours respectfully,
