The Late Wellington Poisoning Case.
Verdict of Guilty. Prisoner Sentenced to Imprisonment for Life. (Pee Press Association.) Wellington, December 7, In the Supreme Court to-day, in the poisoning case, James Blake, husband of the prisoner, Ellen Blake, wag under ex animation. He said hie wiio always prepared his food. He had never bought any white precipitate, nor was he aware that anyone had ever given him any. He certainly had never used it His wife was i kind and attentive to him during his ill. ness, and the had no monetary gain to ex- : pect from his death. They lived very i comfortably together, ; Blake remarked to his Honor that he i had not come into Court in any vindictive i spirit, and he hoped if thero wbb any i doubt about the case the prisoner would receive the benefit of it, i For the defence, two of Mrs Blake's i children gave evidence that white precipi- I tate was kept in the house and had been used on their heads. The Chief Justice having summed up, < the jury retired at S 20, and in about an hour returned with n verdict of guilty, but at the same time recommending the ] prisoner to mercy, ] The Judge said he saw no reason for 1 su;h recommendation, and sentenced i pri'-onor to imprisonment for life. The woman, who seemed dazed, did not t hear the sentence, and on leaving tho ] dock asked tho warder what his Honor had said, but the warder did not givo her n direct answer.
