(Per Pbess Association.) Wkliington, August 25. A mannamod Geo. Evans, a plumber, who was joined with a man named Bailey, on a charge of stealing homing pigeons, to-day attempted suicide by swallowing spirits of salts. Evans' condition is serious, and it is doubtful if he will recover He is about 45 years of age, and a married man. Tho case was called tin's morning and put back owing to non-appear-ance of accused. At the inquest on the fisherman Langdon, drowned at Otaki, evidence showed that the boat capsized near the shore. Deceased managed to got on the boat, which drifted out to sea. When the boat was recovered, two hours after the accident, Langdon was found hanging to tho boat, but waa quite dead. The deceased was a widower, and has a son living in the Wairarapa, two daughters here, and a married daughter at Christchnrch. Sir Eobert Stout went South to-daj by the Penguin. It is understood that tha Licensing Bill, which was on the Order Taper for to-day, will be postponed till Wednesday, The Press says that some of Mr Courtney's emigrants by the Itaahine, notwithstanding the statement that they had been "placed" in Taranaki, have arrived in Wellington in search of employment, and have appliod to the Labour Bureau for relief.
