At a meeting of the creditors of Montefiore and Jo3ophs the direct liabilities were stated at £74,000 and the assets at £70,000 subject to realisation. Moat of the liabilities are duo in London. | Much Bympathy is oxpressed for the firm's misfortune. The result of correspondence between the Minister of Lands and the Railway 1 Commissioners as to whether tha Lands Department should debit the railways with the value of the crown lands used in railway construction, or whether, as urged by tho Commisaioners, the railway accounts should be credited with a portion of the increment conferred upon crown lands by the construction of railways, the Minister of Lands has decided to establish a precedent and insists that the land required by the Commissioners must bo paid for. He has, therefore, requested the Commissioners to debit their accounts with the value of land as if it were acquired from private holders.
