OVERCROWDING STEAMERS.

(Pbr Press Association). Christchurqh, June 9. At the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day Captain Allinan, of the Rotoraahana^was charged, on the information of the Collector of Cuetpni3, with having carried a number of passengers in excess of that allowod by his license. The evidence led in support of the information was to the effect that on a recent trip of the steamer from Wellington to Lyttolton she had 157 Baloon passengers, while she was only licensed to carry ] 50. For the defence it was contended that so long aa the total number mentioned in the license was not exceeded an excess in either saloon or steerage did not constitute an offence. The Eotomahani was licensed to cirry 150 saloon and 126 steerage. On the trip in question she had 165 saloon and 72 steerage, There was provision by which either the saloon or steerage accommodation could be extended, The Magistrate reserved his decision. i
