HALF HOLIDAY MOVEMENT.
TO THE EDITOR. Sik, — As it has been decided to give all employes a half holiday in each and every week, the next consideration is, which day in the week will be the most suitable for all concerned. Meetings of employers have been held, with the result that Saturday afternoon is the day chosen for the purpose. Now, sir, thiß decision has been arrived at from the employes point of view and convenience only. The convenience of the public and labourers 4c, outside the borough has never been considered, nor lias the commercial interests of the town been considered. The * convenience which the grand old Saturday night custom affords to people living at a distance attracts hundreds to our town, who combine business with pleasure, and retiun home at their leisure any time up to Monday morning ; but to make Friday the long day simply means that they will not come at all, because they will have to loose Saturday in order to do so, consequently our interests will be seriously affected by the loss of expenditure which we have up to the present time received. I think, sir, we should all combine to preserve our Saturday night institution, and make it as attrative as possible for visitors and others, and also make all our business arrangements suit their convenience. Wanganui is the chief town and port of the west coast, and she must maintain this position. I feel sure that the Saturday closing would not have been adopted had the question been received in a broad light, and as a day which will meet the convenience of most people ; allow me to suggest Thursday afternoon as the most suitable. — I am, 4c, ■ John Anderson.
