Wellington, August 12. Continuation of evening sitting. THE LAND BIIiL. Mr Rolleston thought the Government had done the country and their party a great wrong in treating Mr Brace's amendment as a vote of no confidence. He referred to the utterances of tbß Premier on one occasion when- he was asked whether he was in favour of the nationalisation of the land, and- he answered that he was in favour of.it, and ' would do his utmost in that direction. That bein^ the caße, he was surprised to hear members who supported the freehold tenure say that th« amendment was not necessary. Ho, of course, would' support the amendment, and he hoped when the division bell rang members " would vote_ for it f reef rbin party ties. Mr McKenzie said the Government had been twitted with making this a party question, bat the Fact was the Opposition had frequently stated that tho supporters of the freehold wsre in a majority in the House, and the Government had therefore determihod to give them an opportunity of proving' that with the result of the division just taken. Again, he pointed out. to the House that the Land Bill provided that anyone could obtain land with option of ' tenure and the right to obtain a freehold if he desired it. He warmly defended tbe ballot system, but said if any better .system were shown to him he should be only too glad to accept it. He criticised at great length the speeches of the mem- " bers of the Opposition, and. said he was prepared to accept any teaaonableameniments n-hicfc would improve the BUI.
