PATEA NOTES.
(From Oob Own Correspondent.) Patra, August 8. Some interesting information aa regards the values of land in the colony is given in the report of the Commissioner of Taxes just issued. Amongst local items may be mentioned that the increase in the valuation of the County of Patea ia £142,330, as compared with , the 1888 assessment, this being inclusive of a portion of the Stratford County, included in the 1880 assessment. So that j that the real increase would probably bo near on to .6200,000. The improved value of the . County i& stated at £823,695 ; value of improvements, .£301,353 ; ut.improved value, £522,322. The Conjrais sioner, whilst acknowledging toe services of Boards of Keviow and assessors, regrets that local, bodies do not afford ." assistance in correcting valuations or descriptions, and comes to the conclusion _ that in order to avoid undue friction with the Government, it ia not desirable to continne the present system of supplying lolls to local bodies. The increase in the valuation of the whole of the colony from 1888 is more than .£1 1,000,000. The North Island claims nearly .£3,000,000 increase; iCounties, . J!6,600,000j and Boroughs, J81.300,000. It is expected that in 1894 tho North Island will be equal in value to the South. The Commissioner considers the valuations fair and reasonable, and gives a lot of Useful information. The report can be inspected at County offices.
