The case for the' defence Was that the canvasser had' induced; the .defendants to sign their names by fraud,, by stating that the price of the book was 12s 6d, making no mention of the fact tfaat.it was in four parts, 12a 6d being the , price of each." A large number of wit- • nesses gave evidence to that effect, and , judgment was reserved. " ■ •-"• ; " ■ ■' • - According to the Globe correspondent, Naseby was thrown into a great state of excitement by the arrival of Mr Bower--man, the " Picturesque Atlas " agent. A crowd collected and rung the flrebell to induce him to leave his botaLi On his doing so he was chased and roughly used by the crowd, who besieged" the hotel for some hours. Some of the crowd knowing that the obnoxious canvasser carries firearms were' also armed with revolvers.
