PROPOSED AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB.

♦ A. meeting of those interested in th formation of an Amateur Athletic Olul in "Wanganui, under the auspices of tin ' N.Z. Amateur Athletic Association, wa held last evening at the Victoria Hotel The following gentlemen were present —Mr Empson (Chairman), and Mossri MeNaught, Howard, Bryce, G. C. Eussell Oomyns, Drew, Eankin, Hobhouse, Me Niven, Woon, and Morton. Mr Empsoi called upon Mr McNaught (who had cor responded with Mr Cuff, Secretary to the N.Z. Association, regarding the formation of a club in Wanganui) to address the meeting. Mr McNaughtreadthe following communication received from Mi c Cuff "At a meeting held here to discuss 7 the formation of the proposed amateur . athletic club in Wanganui-under the a auspices of the N.Z. Association, my comi. mittee instructed me to state that they ". would be willing to grant a big concesn sion in the formation of the club and . would admit to membership all (except b those who had made a regular business of professional running) at the inauguration of the association, but after that the usual period of two years since the last professional performance would have to elapse before that individualoould be admitted to membership." Mr Drew pointed out to the meeting thit a similar association was formed in Wanganui some years ago, and meetings were conducted very successfully on the grounds of the Wanganui Jockey Club. Mr McNaught stated that at Dunedin the meetings were for a time held on a grass track, but when the membership list reached 200 a cinder track: was formed. Considerable discussion took place with regard to suitable giounds for the sports of the association. Mr Empson expressed his willingness to place the College track at the disposal of the association. Mr Comyns proposed that the liberal offer of Mr Empson be accepted, and that the thanks of the meeting be accorded to him for his liberality. This was seconded by Mr J. M. Hogg, and carried unanimously. It was proposed by Mr G-. C. Eussell that a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Drew, MeNaught, McNiven, J. M. Hogg, and Empson be appointed, to make further inquiries and report to a subsequent meeting; this was carried.. The meeting was then adjourned on the proposition of Mr McNaught, seconded by Mr J. M. Hogg, till Wednesday, 10th prox.
