The following aro the census return! for the various provincial districts, ai compared with the returns for the pre vious census, taken in 1886 : — 18') l 1886 Auckland ... 134,512 130,376 Taranaki ... 21,815 17,999 Hawke's Bay ... 28,301 24,568 Wellington ... 96,289 77,536 Marlborough ... 12.835 11,113 Nelson 34,130 30,203 Westland ... 16,282 15,931 Canterbury ... 128,092 121,400 Otago 152,818 149,154 This does not include the lighthouse population on the various islands. Nearly half of the. total increase of the population •of the colony, ii will be seen, is claimed by Taranaki and Wellington. This quite bears out the BegistrarGeneral's prediction that if there was any abnormal increase in any particular district it would be found to be on the West Coast of this island.
