NEW ZEALAND APPLES IN LONDON.
(N.Z. nerald's Correspondent). London, April 18. _ . The consignors of New Zealand fruit must be well pleased with the success of their experimental shipment of apples. The price realised is considered extraordinary, but then the condition of the fruit was superb. While English apples only fetched from 2s to 10s per bushel at public auction at Convent Garden, 400 cases of Papanui apples were sold by Messrs W. N. White and Co. at from 15s to 25s per bushel case. The method of packing seems to have proved quite successful. Every apple was first wiped dry and clean, then wrapped in a separate paper before being packed. Another shipment of 100 cases sent over by the Styx Apple Company, of Christchurch, was sold by auction by Messrs Redfern Alexander, and Co., and fetched equally good prices. Messrs Redfern, Alexander, and Co., report :— The apples were packed in substantial wooden boxes, containing from forty to fifty pounds nett, and they " carried" as a rule very well, only one box being worthless. The prices realised will doubtless be satisfactory to the shippers : Kerry Pippins (dessert apple) 20s a case '■ Emperor Aloxander (large bandsome dessert apple), 24s a case; Hawthorden (cooking apple). 18s a cose j Nonsuch (dessert), 19s a case; Cox Pomona (dessert or cooking), 19s a case; Mobbs' Royal (cooking apple), 14s to 17s a case; Golden Pippin (small dessert.) 6s 9d a case; Old Nonpareil (large handsome dessert), 20e to 21s a case." The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency give the following as the prices
of the varieties of 211 cases ox Ton?ariro : —Shipped at Auckland: Wellington Pippin, 255; King of Toinpkins, 21s j Reinette dv Canada, 18s to 19s Gd; Cleopatra and Cox's Orango Pipp'n, 16s 6d per box. Shipped at Christchurch : King Pippin, 209 ; Emperor Aloxander, 24s ; Hawthornden, 18s ; Nonsnch and Cox Pomona, I9s; Mobbs' Royal, 14s to 17s ; Golden Pippin, 6s 9d ; Old Nonpareil, 20a to 21s ; Lord Lennox, at 19s per case. The apples arriving from Adelaide are very soft and specky, and many of them nearly flavourlesa, the prices ranging from 3s to 11s 6d per case. Most, if not all, cf these Adolaide apples have come as general cargo. Now, it is useless sending fruit unless it be sent in a cool chamber. The cargoes of the Arawa and Pakeha are not yet in the market, but expected every moment. A shipment of Tasmanian apples realised yesterday from 10s to 25s per bushel case.
