' A ''similar petition was presented- from settlers at Taikorea. .It was resolved in both cases that the petitioners be 1 required M furnish the > information.re'qttired"by the. Board's regulations. • ' • ' ■'• * -■!•!-••'• Committee • Elections.— Letters were read from Waverley and Waltotara- respecting the School Committee elections. Ihe solicitor's opinion on the same subject having been read, also a letter from the meeting of householders in Wanganui, it was moved by Mr Bridge, and seconded by Mr Sanson, That the attention of the Minister of Education be drawn to the necessity for amending " The School Committee -Ejection Act, 1890," the following .defects'."- being specially pointed out^.that^no/f-provision is made fgr the following— to" compel chairman of committees , to' comply, witE the Act; to compel committees to provide ballot b.>xes ; for custody of ballot boxes on pol-ling-day.; norfor such a contingency as when less than seven candidates are nominated under section 3, and a sufficient number are not nominated under section 5, to fill.th.c vacancies. Motion carried, ■ SoHotAKSHip ExAMiNAtioNs:—Proposed by ' Mr Sanson, 'Seconded by Mr Bridge and carried, Tbati^beaninstrnc- * a tion to the Inspector to arrange for hold- /*■*- ing competitive ■ examinations of candidates for the scholarships conferred "by this Board at "Wanganui, ' Falm'ereton North, and ffawera respectively, this resolution to continue during, the pleasure of the Board. 'f : •■•«■■ Education Cosi»«bbnce.-^.A letter was received from the Wellington Eduoation Board with reference to a proposed congress of teachers and Inspectors, to discuss witkthe Minister of .Education and the Inspector-General various matters affecting education. It was resolved, That 'the Board approves of this .suggestion, and recommends that the Boards should also be represented.' • • ■ _ Bird Road.— Mr William Lloyd's tender for theerection of a school at Bird Koad was accepted. .- ... Rowan Road.ttA letter was read from Mr Sexton, of Rowan Road, respecting tbe erection (of the school. Moved by -Mr Sanson, seconded by Mr Ross and carried, That the Chairmrn, Mr Bridge, and Mr Hurley proceed to Stratford-Opunake Road- to meet the settlers and finally decide upon the site for a school in that locality. Te Roti. — Letter from committee asking for enlargement of scboolhouse ; similar letter from Whenuakura committee; resolved in both cases "that the request cannot be entertained. Repairs required to roof at Whenuakura referred to Mr Bridge. Paintiko.— Application from Karere for painting. Roaolved, That the painting must. be heldovnr; sundry repairs required to the water elo3ots to be effected. Applications to p.iinfc* Upper Tutaenui and Aramoho Schools held over. Hiwinui.— Application for residence at Hiwinui ; resolved to call for tenders to ; . be referred to the Executive Committee. ...£-- Okoia.— Letter from Okoia re window sashes wanting repairs; referred to Mr Baker with power to act. Holidays.— Letters from Upokongaro and Denlair re postponement of holidays. Resolved, That there is no occasion to postpone them, as the examinations wiU be held later. ' -• - ~ Waitota'ra. — A letter was received from the Education Department consenting to the Board occupying the Police Station at Waitotara as a residence. Peildinq.— Letter from Feilding Com- - mitteo inspecting sundry repairs. Referred to Mr Fry.
The Board then went into committee to consider the Inspector's reports. TENDEES—Moved by Mr Fry, and seconded by Mr Baker That the advertising for tenders for schools at Apiti and Pemberton be held over nnfaU tho roads are dry enough to enable timber to be carted. Motion carried. Boundaries. - Resolved, That the Boundaries Committee be granted an exCon of one month to bring in their 'T/to RoAD.-Itesolved,That the school hitherto known as Spur R,oad be called Pnkeroa. ■
