THE LICENSING ELECTION.

TO THE EDITOB. Sns, — i find thai" considerable misunderstanding exists as to the third of the particularsoftheTemperance^platform," published in your paper last week. That particular relates to the, reduction of the number of public houses in the town and the , .proportion. ' to' ; which* fthey,' shall be brought down; It'has been made to say that, in order to their reduction to that proportion, five of the houses shall be at once closed through /the, refusal of licenses on the next licensing day* But Buch is not the case.' The question has riot even been mooted m the meetings of the Temperance Party, whether the reduction indicated shall be made at once, or gradually during the three yeais. Should tho Temperance candidates be returned, they will take their place on tho Bench, free to use, in 'the best and' fairest way, their own judgment as to the time and manner .of 1 effecting the'lreduction, a^di that they will do. Whilst'correcting iM misimpression, I may take the op^H tunity of correcting, also a misrepres JH tion, which, I am told/ is being diHgj^H propagated, to the effect that'thj^^H houses, to be summarily closedJ^^H been already fixed on. It has nJ^H| been determined which five houda^^H be closed than it feas ,bten defj^H^| that so many shall be closed' aifl^^H I am, &c , James TrbaJH^^H April 6th, 1890. j^HHj
