THE 'FRISCO MAIL SERVICE.
i - ♦ [Peb United Pbess Association.] Wellington, February 24. , The Postal' Department has definitely 1 arranged that henceforth the day of de- , parture^the San Francisco mail from , Auckland snail be on Saturdays instead of Mondayß as hitherto. Although the [ mail will leave five days later, three days [ will be ■ Saved under " the accelerated service recently arranged with the contractors, Messrs Spreckles, and it will arrive in London onljj two days later than under the old service. The authorii ties are, endeavouring to arrange for the i postponement of the departure of the direct mail steamors from Thursday to , Monday, so as to have an alternate fortnightlyservice, but as yet it has not been : completed. A cablegram has been sent to the London postal authorities and the ; directors of the companies contracting for the direct service, and a reply iB expected at any moment. The new arrangen n ent respecting the San Francisco service comes into operation this month, the mail , leaving Auckland on Saturday next, but in the;case, of the direct Bervice it is not expected to be inaugurated before April.
