AUCKLAND ITEMS.
[Per United Press Association.! .■, .. Auckland; ' February 23. ■' Bishop Vidal, tho Roman Catholic Bishop of Fiji, has' arrived in Auckland by tho steamer Taupo. He is en route for Rome, and leaves by the outgoing San Francisco steamer. What is believed to be an important discovery has .just been made in 'the Tararu Gold and Silver Mining Company's mine, Sunbeam Creek, the reef of which, 2ft 6in in thickness, has , been driven upon, and ore of a' valuable* character has been broken but. It contains a large proportion of silver, gold, and galena. The bodies of Messrs John Burnside and Alfred Stevens, drowned in the Ponui boat accident, have been recovered. There is no sign of the fourth young man (Mr Hale), and it, may be that his body lias been swept out to sea. The Commissioner of Crown Lands for South Australia (the Hon. W. Copley) has arrived here on his inspection of the Village Settlement system. In an interview with a Herald representative he stated that he. is much impressed .with the great natural aesourses of the colony, and the wonderful export' of meat to the Mother Country. . For agricultural purposes he has seen nothing better than the land about Timaru and Oamaruj but he should regard the. North Island as better adapted for stock. 1 His Excellency the Governor arrived in Auckland this afternoon by train from Te. Aroha, accompanied by his private secretary.. • Lord Onslow, after he' left Rotorua, went to Tauranga in a buggy, and visited the Gate Pa and other places of interest, afterwards leaving for Katikati. He went thence to Te Aroha, where he was received by the Chairman of the Domain Board. At the'Vequest of the Board he planted an oak tree in the domain in commemoration of his visit. A large number of tourists and residents were present. , ,
