AUCKLAND ITEMS.

[Feu United Press Association.] Auckland, October 19. . The Board of Education have rejected a motion proposed by Mr Lake, to the effect that there should.be no difference whatever in the salaries of malo and femalo teachers. The four inspectorsMessrs Godwin, Airey, Dickenson, and Crowe — have applied for an increase of their salaries, pointing out they are much below those officers of a similar grade elsewhere, and that the inspectors here are paid less than some of the head teachers. The Board adjourned consideration of tho matter for four weeks. The salaries of the inspectors are — Mr Godwin X350 a year, and the others £300 each. Mr Josoph Greenwood, a candidate for Eden, addressed the oleutors of that district at Mount Roskill last night. Ho opposed the Property Tax, asserting that it hampered industry and terrified capital, and also urged retrenchment in the vote for secondary education, and economy in the administration of the primary education vote. He favoured a Land and Income Tax instead of the Property Tax, and maintained that a large reduction could bo made in tho public expenditure. Mr Greenwood received a voto of confidence. "' There is said to be some dissension amongst the labour,. j|krty as to who shall be brought out as the labour candidates for the city. Application is to be made at Rotorua to Chief Judge Smith for a rehearing in the case of some lands in the Waimatapu Valley, on behalf of Mrs Coll and her family there. .The tourist .traffic is reported to be steadily increasing at Rotorua'. Dr -Bakewell, in a lecture on leprosy, urged the electors to insist upon their representatives to take steps to keep this colony free from that disease; and isolate the few cases here at tho present time. .''.''
