THE W.J.C. HANDICAPPER.
Our sporting contributor writes as follows: — Mr William Hately, who for 22 years was Government Sheep Inspector, is one of the candidates for the position of handicapper to the Wanganui Jockey Club, and brings a good record to qualify him for the appointment. He first did duty as handicapper to the Wanganui Club in 1877, and subsequently a similar appointment to the Wellington, Patea, Hawera, New Plymouth, and Waitara Clubs. The Auckland Club also offered him the position of handicapper. Duriug all this period Mr Hately hold an umblemished character in racing circles, and had it not been for the fact of the Government compelling him to relinquish his duties in connection with racing or give up his appointment, ho would no doubt have become handicapper for the whole of the North Island Clubs. It is to be hoped that the Wanganui Club will coincide with popular opinion and unanimously select Mr Hately for the position of handicapper.
