Disturbances in Chili have occurred amongst the men eniploypd in the nitrate districts, despite private advices to the contrary. The Chilian Government assert that order has been restored. The Bishop of Limerick has accused John Dillon of securing his release from prison, by raising a miserable whine about ill-health, and sneaking to the Australian colonies until the storm blew over. The New Zealand Trust and Loan Company has declared a dividend of 10 per cent. The Times says that the floating of the Assets Company has removed the feeling of anxiety regarding the future of the Bank of New Zealand. Major George joins the Board of theA'ssets Company on behalf of the Bank. July 16. Accounts have reached here of serious riots which broke out at Lorapaca, in Upper Peru. Seven thousand rioters defled the authorities, and committed depredations. Troops were called out to restore order, and in dispersing the mob forty persons were killed, July 18. During a storm the pinnacle of the House of Lords was struck by lightning, and part of the masonry was detached. Judge Granthatn had a narrow escape from the'falling debris. Several of the newspapers compliment the aotion of the subscribers in placing a medallion in St. Paul's Cathedral jd memory of the late Mr W. B. Dalley. None of the Australian competitors are included in the three, hundred who are loft in the competition for the silver medal at Wimbledon. The modal is to be awarded to the competitor who makes the highest score in the first series for the Queen's prize and gold medal. Madrid, July 18. Eight thousand labourers struck work at Maneresa, and threatened to burn the town, but the military dispersed the crowd. Many of the rioters were killed. •ma St. John s July 16. The Newfoundland gunboat Fiona fired on a French fishing boat which was ' violating the bait regulations. The fishing boat managed to escape, without sustaining any damage. The French warship Miguelon and H.M.S. Comus are investigating the matter. New York, July 17. A terrible calamity occurred at Loveland, Ohio.- A gunpowder train exploded in the vicinity of a cartridge factory. The latter became ignited, and twenty of the employes were killed, while fifty were seriously injured. Home, July 17. Hia Holiness the Pope to-day drove beyond the' precincts of the Vatican on a visit to the sculptors' studio. The guard at the Mint presented arms when the Pope passed. A party of Anarchists at Monza stopped I the Prince of Naples' carriage and insulted the occupants. A detachment of police promptly dispersed the mob. The Prince declined to take' proceedings against the offenders. Pabis, July 17. The French Government have reasserted their claims to pre-emption in the Congo in preference to Belgium. Vienna, July 17. The Emperors of Austria and Germany meet at Leguitz in the autumn, on pretence of attending the coming military manoeuvres. Constantinople, July 17. Russia has amassed a large force of troops on the Armenian frontier. BwenosAtbes, July 17. The situation in" the Argentine Republic and Uruguay shows decided signs of improvement.
