Opinions were greatly divided as to whioh would win, and if anything Gray was the favourite. The Btart was very even, Gray catching the water quickest, and after a very few yards had been made, showed a good quarter' of a length load,, whioh. he increased to a length at the bend. Hughes : spurted 'several times, coming up very olose but' drqpping back again, the pace ..being far too warm. However, he kept pegging in with a splendid stroke, and gradually lessened the distance, till opposite the enclosure, where he drew level. ; Then ensued a splendid struggle, tho crews rowing in grand style, neck and neck to* 'gefiher. ' The' superior strength of Hughes' ' crew now began' to' tpli, and gradually he drew away, winning one of the boat races yet seen' on the river, by about two lengths.
