INCENDIARISM NEAR CHRISTCHURCH.

(Per United Press Association). CmiJSTciimtcH, June 28. Unsuccessful attempts were made this morning to burn down the suburban police stations at Phillipstown and Woolston. At the first station gorse and dry sticks were put under the building, and set on fire. At Woolston a fire of gorse sticks and coal was ignited against the lock-up at about 3.20 o'clock. Larrikinism has been preva. lent in both districts for some time. Neither station is seriously injured. Later. It is supposed that the attempts to burn the Woolston and Phillipstown police stations were the work of the same parties. The stations are both on the Perry road, nearly two miles apart. The Woolston station was discovered to be on fire nt 3.30 a.m. by a woman sleeping in the next house, who heard the crackling of flames. Constable Johnston and the neighbours extinguished the flames after a portion of the wall had been burned. The building is leased by the Government, and insured in the Union office. The Phillipstown station is owned by Government, and is uninsured. It is in charge of Constable McGill, whose son, a telegraph messenger, found the fire under the lockup on returning from work at 5 a.m. The /lames were extinguished before much injury was done. In both instances dry gorse sticks had been used under the buildings and set on fire.
