The local men won the toss, and went in. staying at the wickets till just on six o'clock. Several of tbe Wellington men played confidently, and hit with freedom, namely, Salmon, Lawson, R. Blacklock, and McGuire. IJiley, tbe top scorer, was missed twice — once by Palmer, but he played Garrett's bowlingbetter than that of any other bowler. He wins one of the five guinea trophies offered by himself. The Australian.:? showed signs of fatigue, and Evans and Phillips were not well after the rough trip.
