Tha intelligence has been cabled to the Postmaster-General of New South Wales, with an inquiry if he would bo prepared to entertain it. 1 Tho Cable Company hive received for carriage of messages from New Zealand to Australia on account of the New Zealand and Anstralian cable.i.respoctive of rjtyments for transmission beyond Australia, during 1885, the sum of £10,600, and probably an equal amount for the use of the cable frcm Australia to New Zealand, besides a subsidy of £7500. Mr Pender has varied nis plans. He now cables that he will reduce his rate by Is 4d per word on tbe Ist of July for telegrams between England and Australia, the same as he has agreed to do with the China system. The reduotion will be made without any additional subsidy, but he will make a further reduotion of Is 2d if the colonies agree to his proposal to extend the existing subsidy, bo as to make it run twenty years from now, and that if tbe contributing colonies shall join on these cons ditions the extra Is 2d reduction will be granted, He will also, as an inducement to Now Zealand to join, agree to I the proposals made by the Government re tho Australian cable, and will not raise the rates in the moamvi-ih} until tho list of July.
