EDUCATION BOARD.
A special meeting of this board was held yesterday. Prosent — Messrs Sanson (in the chair), Bakor, Carson, and Eev. Ross. The following businoss was done : —
Crofton and Hivehton. — Letters recoived from the committees stating that notice of dismissal had boon givon to the teachers.
Matarawa — Letter from the committee requesting that the teacher be retained. — Resolved that Mr Von TBlareuiberg he retained pending the result of next year's examination.
Parkwanui. — The report of the ooin-< mittee appointed by the board to investigate tho chargo of drunkenness against Mr A. K. Harlook, tho teachor afc Pare*, wanui, having beon road, it was moved by Mr Baker, and seconded by Mr Eoss, That as the Parewanui committee have reinstated the master without the board' 3 sanotion, the board, without wishing to establish this as a precedent, aro willing to give tho teacher an opportunity of retrieving his character by acceding- to tho wishes of the committee Tho resolution was carried, Mr Riinson voting against it.
WIIENUAKUKA. — Mr Marshall, of Fitzherbert and Marshall, the beard's solicitors, atteuded at tho request of the board, to advise on the subject of the suspension by tho commissioners of tho teacher recently appointed. It appeared tliat the teacher, who came from the Napior distriot, was appointed by the board, but failed to attond at tho board's offica fur instructions, and presented himsalf at tho Whenuakura school in a stale of drunkenness. Tho eouitniiisinnors refused to adaiifc him, and subsequouty pasied aipsolutioiissuspendiiig him. Mr Marshall said tho commissioners had acted rightly, and that the board woro entitled to peremptorily dismiss him undor clause 47 of the Education Act. — Resolved that the teaobor (MTr J. H. Stewart) be peremptorily dismissed from the board's service in consequence of having presented himself tit tho Whenuakura school in a state of drunkenness.
Makino Eoad. — Letter from committee strongly urging the retention of teachor, and giving lengthy reasons. — Agreed tbat the teacher he rotained pending the result of next year's examination.
TFeilding. — Letter from committee, forwarding a copy of a resolution passed as follows : — The committee of the Feilding school not being satisfied with the results obtained under the present staff at the examination held last month, would respectfully ask the board to reorganise the said staff, and make fresh appointments where the board consider necessary. A subsequent letter stated that " the committee consider there is no oxouse this year, as it has been an unusual one. There has been ample school accommodation, no sickt. ness, no absences on the part of the teachers, and no changes in the teaching staff (the groat excuse of former years). It has been a year without a break, wbich plainly shows thero is something wanting." — It was rosolved that the further consideration of tho case be deferred until tho regular monthly meeting of the board, when tho inspector is to be requested to be present.
The other busiuess was merely formal.
