THE WANGANUI HOTEL.

■ » ■ TO THE EDITOB. Sib,— ln yonr issue of the 22nd inst; there appeared a looal re the Wanganu l Hotel. Will you please insert the following few remarks on the same. The inspector reports " the house dirty, and my absence from home as his reasons for endeavouring to close the house," but the wording of your local is a slur on my oharaotor as a publican. If the houso itself is dirty, it is not my fault, fov the furniture, bedding, and floors are ns clean as aiiy house in town ; but the house wants repainting and papering.and the dirty appearance it has is the fault of my landlord and not mine, for I have requested him several times to put tho hotel in repair, but he will not. _As to my absence, I saw it would be impos--f ible for mo to meet my engagements ■u-.less I went to work to earn money to <!. so, as owing to several natives who <j ive mo money not heing paid for their land that they put through the last Native Land Court they could not pay me. Consequently I was forced to get money somewhere to enable me to pay my way. There is no doubt my house hus been more frequantod by tho native population than any other in town. If this is the reason Mr Inspector James is endeavouring to close the house, then ihe Maoris will go to some other house, and I suppose Mr James will then havo to close that one, or grant a particular license to one or two particular houses for tbe accommodation, of the respectable people. Had Mr James reported that the house was not wantod I should no. have troubled a bit about it, as I do not want the license, but he accuses mo, andyour local is worded so,thatit isreally damaging to my character as a publican. . I have boen a holder of a publican's license for four different houses in four different localities for the space of over twenty years, and never had a mark or report against me yet. Apolegising for the length of this. — I am, &c, John Woolston. Wanganui, May 25th, 1885.
