POLICE COURT.

♦ Wednesday, May 27, 1885. (Before J. Handley and G. S. Eobertson, J.P.s) DKONKENKES3. Jeremiah Corney was charged with being: drunk in a publio place. Accused pleaded guilty. Sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment. LARCENY, Frederiok Potto was charged with stealing a coat, the property of Thoina3 Adamson. Prisoner pleaded not guilty. Thomas Adamson said he was staying at the Wanganui Hotel ; had an overcoat ; had occasion to take it off and put it on a fence for a few minutes, during which time ifc was taken away. Witness said he could not swear to the coat, bufc believed it was his. Mr Hanson said witness purchased a coat from him of the oaine description as the one produced. Detective Benjamin said he arrested the prisoner last night at the Empire Hotel with the coat iv his possession. Whan arrested he said he miisi have borrowed il, and afterwards said he bought it ion ,')3 from a drunken man up the Aveauo. Prisoner said he bought the coat oa Monday from a little stout fellow goiug up the Avenue who had no money to go on the road with ; believed he had gone to IJfuigitikei. Sentenced to 14 days' .imprisonment iv the Wanganui Goal, FALSE PKETENCKS. Alfred Waters was charged, on tha information of A. D. Willis, with obtaining £1 under false pretences. Prisoner pleaded guilty, but denied any intention, to defraud. Inspector James said accused had been informed by tho clerk on tho 10th of April that after tha bank book had been made up a cheque was dishonoured for the sum of .£6. Inspector James said there wore -two other charges against him, one byMrPaul ' for £5, and another by l*!icholls and Co. for £2. Sentenced to three months' imprisonment in WaDganui Gaol with hard labour, the bench remarking that it was a pity to see a person in prisoner's position up on such a charge.
