THE QUABEEL BETWEEN CARTERS.
CHAEGE OF MTJRDEE. The quarrel which took place on Saturday afternoon last between two oarters named Bowes and Eichard Thomaß, in the course of which the latter, after receiving gross provocation, struck the former on the head with a heavy pick, has resulted fatally. Bowes, of- whose -' recovery from concussion of tha train strong hope 3 were entertained on Wed- ; nesday, relapsed into unconsciousness . 1 yesterday evening ; his symptoms gr^y . -j
a
. "; dually became alarmingly worse, and he ':; .expired' soon, after noon. Dr Tripe had p been in constant attendance on the de- - ceased since Monday morning last, and . .•; -it is probable that had he or some other j^ medical man been" called in earlier the i.; .result . of .the bl,o~w- might" have been .?-■ ".different. Asit;was, Bowes was with- ■ . out medical attendance, and without the ; -■wound- having been, dressedyfrom Satur-"■-day afternoon till Mpriday morning. We are .informed that Dc/Eripe from the first ■held out novhopes* of -Bowes's recovery, "< and his gloomy, anticipations h»ve proved -unfortunately correct. ' ■ A post mortem, •examinationwiir of .course be made, and • "it will then be found whether' or not the ' skull was fractured, a matter which it has 'hitherto hem impossible to investigate, owing to the wound being very much swollen. "Tfh'omasi who had been charged ■with unlawfully wounding, and was out on baß, was yesterday arrested by direction of Inspector. James, upon the terrible .charge of murder, and was removed to the lock-up, where he still remains. An .inquest upon .the body of Bowes will take place this morning, at 11 o'clock, : liinjthe" grand Jury roomof the Supreme '.- --Courthouse; and it is probable that the • accused man :> will be brought up in """ : 'Custody to 'the Coroner's court. The ; - -evidence of Mr S. Wright, the employer ; of both- Bowes and Thomas, will be ' ■ -taken, and as he alone witnessed the 'fatal quarrel, his testimony will be most ■important. Hitherto he has been very ' reucent upon the subject, and even refused £o acquaint Detective Benjamin "T' , -with the facts — an unusual course for a gentleman, in Mr Wright's position to 'adopt, and one not calculated, now that Bowes's lips are closed in death, to promote the ends of justice. We will . ■ mot anticipate the verdict of the jury, but it is a subject of 1 ' deep regret all over Wanganui that the ) quarrel of 'Saturday last should have ' had .this terrible result. Bowes leaves* ; behind him a . wife and two children, J 'one two years old and the other five; ' and Thomas, the man in custody, has . also a wife and two children. The fatal result of the quarrel (the original cause of which Mr Wright alone can clear up), - has created a marked sensation all over the town.
