CRICKET.

AUCKLAND T. WANGANUI. This important match ia to be played on tho 13th and 14th of December, and, as it is causing considerable interest in Wanganni cricket circles, it will not be out of placo to criticise the play of those who will in nil probability wield tbo willow for the district, so that by practice they may remedy defects. We understand that the following twenty-two | will probably be chosen to practice, aud . from them the final eleven will bo picked : ', Messrs Cross, Notman, Kennedy, White, ' Powell, Moore, Suuley,' Aatnodt, Fry, '] Anson, H. M. B. Maishall, J. Lockett, E. Lockett, Bruce, A. Gray, Chaldecott, ; F. Parkes, T. Parkes, Salmon, Thomson, Stubbs, and Pirani, the last four being from Palmerston. ' Cross — A good all-round man, active in the field, good steiling defence, free hitter, but prone to be too anxious at the onset to make runs, wants patience, smart wicket-keeper, comes off sometimes as a fast bowler. Notman — A good point, returns the ball smartly and to the right height; sometimes comes off with the bat, but lacks forward play ; requires practice. Kennedy — A fair bowler, but with not quite enough, head work ; fairly smart in the field ; does not make many runs, owing to slogging propensities; requires a good deal of coaching. White — Good defence ami stonewaller ; a fair cover-point, but does not return the ball sharply, and throws in too low; can be. relied on to make a stand. A little more activity in the field would be appreciated. S. Powell— One of the best men in the team ; good defence, and good slip, bowls fairly; and, above all, an enthusiast in the game. Moore— An active field in any place ; reliable wicket-keeper; good hitting power, but requires to play with a straighter bat ; wants more coaching ; is a fair change bowler. Sunley — One of the best bowlers of the team — breaks from leg ; stubborn defence; -smart in catching, but returns too low, and appears too nonchalant in the field. Aamodt— The long-stop of the team — seldom allows one to pass him, fast return, and proper height ; fair change bowler, but no head work — will do better with practice. Anson — Not played this season, active in the field, and sometimes makes runs. : Noted for his stonewalling. H. M. B. Marshall — A young colt, s forward play is his forte, bad in returni ing the hall, and not wide awake in the s field. Bruce — A good bowler, with break i from the off, seldom hits, bat a very f Barlow in defence. Fair in the field. J. Locketfc — A good howler, fair field, - with passable hatting defence, but is in i want of practice. f B. Lockett — Sure catch, fair field, , returns ball smartly, sometimes comes s off- with the bat, also requires praotice. r Gray — A change howler, apparently f howls "beyond his strength. Too impetuous as a hat, good in the field, 1 and with good return. Will eventually „ make a cricketer. '„ Chaldecott — A fair bowler, very active n in the field, hits all round the ball. Res quires patience. j p r y — An enthusiastic cricketer, would s be good with more practice, to stiff in o field, good style of batting, but no freei. dom. , „ t PaTkes (2)— Both good bats, and fair d change howlers. Require a little moro o elasticity in the field, and a better style

_■_ H ■ ■ ■* V V J-m.^. 'Salmon-i-An old ' Wellington player, good field, straight 'as a' '■ fast or slow bowler ; can be relied on to make runs ; has a perfect knowledge of the. game. Thomson — Left hand bat, stubborn defence, and occasionally hard hitter ; bowls fairly; very active as point or slip. Stubbs— One of the old school, quiet, steady defence, makes runs slowly; wants -more aotivity in the field ; fair wioket-keeper. Pirani — A good field, and returns smartly ; good defence, but very unfortunate. As the Auckland team are represented as being strong, it behoves our men to constantly practice.
