ARRIVAL OF THE STEAMER SURRENTO.

The Sloman, Line Bteamer Sorrento, Captain I aul, left Newcastle on Wednesday afternoon last, and arrived off the Queen's Wharf at 3 p.m. yesterday, having experienced light variable winds and fine weather, throughout. ..The f'orreotois a vessel of 1800 tons register, and was built in 1881, on the Clyde, and subsequently sold to her present owners, whoso headqaarters are in Hamburg. She is rigged as a topsoil sehconer. , As she came' tip the harbour, there was no thing about her except her flags and a green section of her funnel by^'which she could be distinguished from thelarger, steamers of the Union Company, nor does ehe differ mateiially from them its far as her depks are .concerned, cxcoi t that the main deck is c -vered with iron, which certainly docs not ijive them a tidy appearance. Her bridge is, however, planked in the usual manner. Tho saloon, which is spacious, and very neatly finished, tiud calculated to afford every comfort to passengers, i 3 approached by a companion leading from the bridge. Her meat-freezing chamber and machinery is situated under the'forebatch, and is capable of holding 350 tons in the carcas?. Tho machinery, which is one of Hicks and Hargreavcs's patent, hai been fonnd to work admirably. During tha xetorn voyage from Australia early this year, she carried afull cirgo of this description, and landed it, in excellent condition, the whole of it being purchased for the British troops in Egypt. Unfortunately the space allotted for this kind of produce has been engaged at Fort Chalmers, so that there ia not the slightest chance of even a Single carcase being loaded at this port. Her agents (Messrs W. and G. 'J'nrnbull and Co.) are, however, prepared to receite any quantity of wool on her account. The Sorrento brought no cargo for this port, and has r othing aboard beyond 1500 tons of, coal. * hipped at Newcastle, which, it is calculated, will carry her Home, She remains in port till 'Wednesday afternoon, when she leaves for Lyttelton and Fort Chalmers, en ronte for liondon, Aatwerp, and Hamburg, bf, way of the Suez Canal. — Now Zealand Times, 14th instant.
