PUBLIC MEETING AT HAWERA.

A public meeting was held in the Town Hall ou Wednesday evening to urge upon the Government the necessity for establishing a District Court at Hawera, and other matters. Mr Furlong occupied the chair. The following jesolutions were earned : — That a Committee be appointed to take all necessary steps to bring under the notice, and urge upon the Government, the necessity for making the following provisions for the convenience of the public ; The appointment of a District Court at Hawera, and clerk; The erections of buildings suitable for a Courthouse, land,_ aud other offices ; The constitution of the Hawera Registration District into a district under the Licensing Act, and the constitution of a Licensing Court to sit at Hawera ; The completion of the copies of standard plans of land in the West Coast District, and that part of the Taranaki Land District lying south of the Patea River ; The sugary to the District Land Office, Hawera,' of copies of all the plans deposited in the District Land Registry Office, at New Plymouth, of lands sub-divided. An after meeting was immediately called by Mr Livingstone re County separation. Mr Furlong was again voted to the chair. Mr Livingstone explained the objects for which the meeting was called, and drew attention to a telegram from Major i Atkinson, which read as follows: — " Am infoi-med by Colonial Secretary's Department, proclamation re County will be issued and laid on table of House tomoiTow." It was proposed by Mr Livingstone, and carried, That the thanks of the meeting be forwarded to their representative for his attention to the matter of the County separation movement. Mr Yorke moved, seconded by Mr Hunter; That this meeting desires to express a strong sympathy with the movement in favour of County separation, and trusts that the member for the district will forward the movement to the best of his ability. Mr McGuire spoke at considerable length in opposition to the foregoing resolutions. He considered the present an unfortunate moment to advocate County separation. He believed that those present would live to regret their present policy. Mr McGuire then proposed an amendment, which was lost. Proposed by Mr Livingstone, seconded by Mr M. D. King, That this meeting consider it inadvisable that the boundaries of the Electoral District of Egmont be altered at the present time.
