MARTON HORTICULTURAL SO CIETY'S AUTUMN SHOW.
The above Society's Show was held in the Volunteer Drill-shed on Tuesday, at Marton, and passed off very well, the day being fine. A number of people visited the Show and expressed themselves as being very well satisfied. We would like to have seen more exhibits, but some people are always, loud with complaints about this and that* rather than take an interest in such laudable objects. Mr Jas. Laird and Mr Field, from Wanganui,' along with Mr -J. Mcßeth, acted as judges, and, we believe, gave general satisfaction. There was a very neat- thing got up, in -the 7 shape of a flower device, which represented a village church complete, with spire, coloured glass windows, and in--side might be seen the alter with a tiny table with candles thereo*n. "In the evening it was lit up, and attracted much attention. Miss Suellgrove was the designer. Some of the pot plants were very good, and the collection of cut flowers were highly commended by the judges. Some remarks were passed by the judges that exhibiting flowers in old tins should be discouraged. The fruit exhibited was very good, notably the apples, thus showing " that the country people are 'going in for improving their orchards. The vegetables were also very good. We noticed some monster onions, weighing 21bs lOozs. In tiie evening the band of the Eoyal Eifles discoursed some lively strains to the c trident delight of some present if not all.
