WELLINGTON.

February 22. The barque Mabel, from New York, arrived in harbour this morning from New York via Dunedin. A very serious bush fire has been raging in Oharriu for some days past, and a large quantity of fencing has been burnt, also some valuable rams. A third party is negotiating with Macmanaman. for the lease of a section in. the vicinity of the Albion claim at Terawhiti. A determined assault was made to-day on Mr S. O. Crawford, late R.M. here. A man named G. Styles met him in the street, and struck him over the head with a whip. He attempted a second blow, but was seized by a bystander. The cause of the assault appears to be that Mi- Crawford gave a decision against Styles some three years ago. He was taken in charge by the police. The Lunatic Asylum enquiry was resumed to-day. The evidence is still strongly against Whitelaw.
