THE ESTIMATES.

, The Estimates for the current financial year 1880-81, are as follows :— Revenue: Customs, £l,2so,ooo; Stampß, £140,000; Property Tax, £300,000; Railways, £950,000 ; Postal, £145,000 : Telegraphs, £80,000 ; Judicial, £60,000 ; Land - Transfer and Deed Registry, £32,000; Itegistrati n and other fees, £32,000; Marine, £16,000; Miscellaneous, £50.000 ; Pastoral Licenses, £135,000— total, £3,190,000. Expenditure: Civil List, £29,750; Interest and Sinking Fund, £1,453,161 ; Permanent Appropriations under special Actß of Legisiaiure, £50,587 ; Legislature, £39,851 ; Colonial Secretary's Department, £170,220; Treasury, £49,470; Justice, £137,139; Postal and Telegraphic, £278,646 : Customs, £90,843 ; Stamps, £23,785 ; Education, £297,730 ; Native, £14,262 ; Mines, £23,200 ; Public Works, £634,079; Defence, £180,981 —total, £3,473,709. But from this has to be deducted £225,000, the estimated amount which will not be actually spent within the year, and £50,000, departmental reductions, the total net expenditure being, therefore, £3,198,709, leaving a deßcit of £8709. To the revenue, however, has to be added the proceeds of the proposed new taxation, viz., Beer Duty, £80,000 j Increase in Succession Duties, £10,000 total, £90,000, less £40,000 the estimated loss by exemption of personal effects from Property Tar, giving a net addition of £50,000. If from this the deficit of £8709 6a 76. be deducted, it leaves £41,290 13s 5d ua the estimated surplus for this year. '
