Christchurch, May 15. In the import market during the past week transactions in most' lines have been of a most restricted nature, and have been confined to the purchase of goods for pressing requirements. The ovidont reluctance of traders to increase engagements is met by the merchants with an extra amount of caution in making sales, not only as to amount, but as to selection of marks. The bitter oxporience of tho past few months is beginning to tell, and it would have been well if tho same right conditions that now obtrude themselves on the consideration of importers when parting with good* had been acted upon months and months ago. There is little change to report in the grain market. During the week transactions have been more limited than usual. Wheat in small parcels has changed hands at 3s 2d to 3s 3d for ordinary to fair samples and 3s 4d to 3s 5d for good milling and seed samples. The continued unsettled state of the English market have almost stopped sales for these. In flour but little business is doing. Town brands are still quoted at £8 ss ; best lines of country brands are to be had at considerably less. Oats continue very dull. Large sales are reported from southern districts. Locally, sales have been made at 2s 2d to 2s 3d for feed quality, and 2s 4d for milling. Barloy has experienced a sharpe decline ; best samples ss. Potatoes are in fair demand at 55s to fi7s 6d, but farmers 80 not care to part with.them at these figures. Butter and cheese are without alteration. Hams and bacon are not quite ready for export yet.
