AN EXPLANATION.
(To the Editor of the Chronicle.) Sib, — A letter lately appeared in your contemporary, the authorship of which is very apparent, and would not require noticing except that the production of " Another Ratepayer " is attributed to Mr. Watt, and as I am the best able to contradict the falsehoods and assertions contained in it, I hope you will give this a place in your columns. " Eatepa, yer" asserts that the allegation that Mr Hutchison assisted to do away with the office of Inspector for the ; . purpose of getting it j himself is untrue. 'Now, here is a distinction withoat a difference. The facts of the case are simply these : When the, Board to advertise for an Inspector, Mr Hutchison canvassed those of the Board ha considered his friends for their support, as he -was intending to apply for the vacant office ; but not meeting with any response from the members, he never put in his application. From his subsequent conduct it was quite apparent that he could not get on with either the Secretary or the Inspector j and seeing that they were the right men in the right place, he joined with Mr Tooinath for amalgamation. Advantage was afterwards taken of a very thinly attended meeting to carry this measure, with the assistance of the member for Waitotara, who was deceived by their misrepresentations, and who has since regretted very much having voted with them. Tours, «Sec, W. H. Watt. September 15.
