Every effort was put forth in order to save the craft, but without avail, and the vessel has now been abandoned. Thn Alert •was tho property of Mr Beauohainp, and was insured in the National Insurance Company. An inquiry into the, omjutnstances attending s her wreck was to have been held on Wednes-' day. • •■'l • It wili be remembered that an exciting race from Port Chalmers to Oainaru, between the steamers Albion and Taupo, took place on Monday, 30th August, in which the first named steamer was the victor by about a . mile. The result was very disappointing to the friends of the Taupo,l as it was expected she would be able to show the Albion the road, notwithstanding that her bottom was in a 'rather- foul state. The Haweahas however, quite' retrieved the laurels of the Union Com- | . p&uy, . as she had an opportunity of testing | her .powers alongside the Albion on Thursday : morning, when they both? entered Wellington Heads together. The Hawea is in better fettle than the Taupo,. and -showed that she was more than a match for the Albion by completely outstripping her... Considerable interest was taken in the race in Wellington. — ' Dun edin Evening Star.*
