NELSON.
March 13 (From a Correspondent.)
Every one knows that Nelson is a very quiet place, and consequently there is a great dearth of news— quiet is its prevailing feature. However I send you one or two items : —
The second show of the season under the auspices of the Nelson Horticultural Society, was held in the Provincial Government Buildings on Thursday the 4th of March,, and was visited by a large
number of people.' The display of flowers and fruits was very good. In addition to this the orchestra of the Harmonic Society played at intervals during the time that the hall was open to the public. The Easter Voluuteer Encampment will be attended by all the corps in the Nelson district, and by a detachment of the Wellington Artillery. Full particulars in my next. A Naval Brigade has just been farmed and the Governor has acceptedjtheir services. There is to be another grand crickets match here, which will probably be played about the second week in April. The challenge comes from the Westland cricketers this time. Mr A. McKellar Wix haa been elect* ed Captain of the City Rifles, vice C. L, McLean, resigned, deeply regretted. The Hou. Mr Fox wis present at a meeting of Good Templars here the other evening. He regretted that the various Ministers did not do more to assist the Templars. Also regretted to see so many public houses iv Nslson, and thought it was owing to them that so large a Lunatic|Asylum|and Hospital were required. While on the subject of buildings, I may say that our Provincial Government Buildings, though not particularly handsome in appearance, are apparently commodious, aud well adapted for the conduct of public business. They are situated at a little distance from the road in pleasant grounds planted with coniferse and other trees and plants. A diminutive fountain and two Lilliputian ponds may be also discovered by the sharp-sighted. The Council Hall is a fine room, but is unfortunately spoiled by a bad echo within it.
