AUCKLAND.

Aug 4,

Mr Oassy has agreed to refer his salvage claims against the ' Miltiades ' to arbitration. Captain Daldy in a strong speech at the City Council on the irregularities of the revenues of the various Provinces, and the inability of Auckland to provide proper means of government, although contributing a quarter of a million to the Customs revenue, moved that the police protection of the City is insufficient to prevent crime, and that a telegram be sent to the Superintendent requiring him to bring the matter under the notice of the General Government. The motion was carried unanimously.
